AAA Summer League at Newark On Friday 20th August at Newark rugby club the final road race of the Notts AAA Summer League was held. This was 9.25k (5.75miles) in length; all the runners must have been warmed up well at the start on this wet miserable night, as the start was a fair distance from the parking. There were 247 runners of which 69 were women. Sutton in Ashfield Harriers had 14 members running consisting of six ladies all of which came in the first few completing the race. Clare Woolis finished 1st with Lisa Knights 5th followed closely by Simone Matthias, Alison Clarke and Jackie Robson. This assisted greatly in elevating Sutton's senior ladies team to first position overall in this years series of five races. The Sutton Harriers male members in the race were led by Rob Starr followed closely by Shaun Bird, Steve Brewer, Bruce Clarke, Dave Pickering, Terry Morris-Hunt, Alan Dickens, Ken Hemsby and Andy Mitchell. Unfortunately the senior men could not field a team for this event therefore were not included in the overall team results but the vet men were positioned 7th from the 27 teams that entered at the beginning of the season. Individually all the runners during the season did well in their individual races but overall the Sutton Harriers club members who managed to attend all the 5 races this season and hence given an overall position, were Steve Brewer in 23rd and Alan Dickens in 49th from 178 male runners completing the series. In the ladies individual grading Lisa Knights was 1st, Simone Matthias was 3rd and Jackie Robson was 6th overall from a total 69 ladies who competed in all the races. This may be the end of this series of races but the runners are not resting on their laurels they are preparing hard on Tuesday and Thursday at Ashfield School for some of the forthcoming marathons that are imminent as well as preparing for the start of the cross-country season.

Hucknall 10k report from Hucknall today SUPERMUM Claire Woolis rewrote the history books in the annual Hucknall 10K road race last Sunday. For she became the first woman to win the event since it was inaugurated 15years ago In a superb run, the Sutton Harrier led all the way and, amazingly, finished nearly a full minute ahead of the second-placed runner Claire's winning time of 34 minutes, 53 seconds clipped three seconds off the women's record for the event, which was set by Carol Holmes, of Notts AC A delighted Claire revealed that it was her personal best time since she returned to running after giving birth to her nine-month-old daughter Maisie. The baby was present to see her cross the finishing line and was being looked after by Claire's mum, Valerie Naylor (61), also a member of Sutton Harriers, who was taking a break after winning the category for women over 55 in last year's 10K. Arthur Short, of Grantham Athletics Club, was the first male runner home, coming second in a time of 35-51 - just under five minutes below the men's record of 30-52, set by Redhill Roadrunner Andy Tarry ten years ago. Third place went to another Sutton Harrier, Dean Cross, in 36-01. The second and third women home were Emma Phillips, of Tipton Harriers, who was first last year, and Sandra Schneider, of Redhill Roadrunners. Last year's winner, Dave Quinlan, of Mansfield Harriers, finished well down the field in 13th place, clocking a time more than four seconds slower .The winner of the over-40 men's category was Dave McMillan, of South Derbyshire Roadrunners, who came fourth overall with a time of 36-45, and the winning man over 50 was John Cresswell, of Stilton Striders, who finished sixth overall in exactly 37 minutes. The other veteran winners were Heather Thornton (unattached) in 45-05 for women over 35, Heather Walker (unattached) in 49-35 for women over 45, Nigel Daniels (Redhill Roadrunners) in 45-18 for men over 60 and Sandra Poole (Holme Pierrepont Running Club) in 51-33 for women over 55.Once again organised by Hucknall Roadrunners, the 10K attracted a disappointing turnout of 166 runners - 52 less than last year's figure .Road runners chairman Clive Norris is baffled as to why there was such a poor response ."In contrast to the searing sunshine of the last few years, the conditions were just about perfect for running," he said Those taking part did, however, include competitors from as far a field as Derby, Coventry and Sheffield .The latter city was once again represented by pram-pushing John Burkhill (65), of Killamarsh Harriers .It was John's 555th 10K in 20 years, during which time he has raised £12,000 for children's charities - as well as a magnificent £83,000 for cancer research He said: "I am always resigned to finishing last because kids tend to stop me during a race to ask why I have got the pram ."I love to take part in the Hucknall 10K because the people round here are so nice. I think they are really wonderful." The 6.2-mile event followed its customary route through Papplewick Lane, Vaughan Estate and Papplewick and Linby villages. For the first time in six years, the poet Lord Byron's statue in the former Co-op building, now renamed the Byron Centre, looked down on the runners as they turned from Ogle Street to the finishing point on Hucknall Market Place .Support for the event was again received from Hucknall Rotary Club, Kodak and the Hucknall and Linby St John Ambulance division. Other forthcoming runs are Redhill Roadrunners' Newstead Abbey dash on Friday August 27, the same club's Bestwood Country Park 10K and one mile and 500-metre fun runs on Sunday October 11 and the Scott King five-mile run, organised by Hucknall Roadrunners, on Sunday October 17.
