Cross Country County
Championships 2010

RACE REPORT BY PAUL WHITTINGHAM Saturday 23rd January saw Mansfield Harriers host the rearranged Nottinghamshire cross country county championships. A ten race program began at 11am and ended at 2.20pm, the weather was dry compared to recent days and at last all the snow and ice had gone but this left a testing stamina sapping course for all the competitors. The race program began with the under 11 girl’s race, set over 1500 metres. In what is probably one of the most competitive age groups, Erin Bowmar led the trio of Sutton runners home in an excellent 12th place. She was closely followed by Eleanor Morley in 15th with Kate Davis completing the team in 28th. Sutton Under 11 boys Win
Bronze. In the under 11 boys race over the same distance Ben Burnham 11th led a closely packed team home, Owen Hodson13th and Richard Nock 18th meant the boys finished 3rd in the team event collecting a bronze medal for their gallant efforts. Just missing out on the team prize were Jake Collins and Callum Ball finishing 21st and 27th respectively. In the under 13 boys race over 3000 metres Michael Elliott 13th and Quin Bailey 27th represented the harriers and in the under seventeen’s men’s race Callum Goodyear was Suttons only representative but ran a good race finishing 12th . Sutton Ladies Collect Team Silver With Individual medals for Sally and
Alison. Sutton didn’t have to wait long before collecting its next medals winning team silver with individual medals for Sally Hughes and Alison Thurman. Hannah Mulcaster returning to racing after an interruptered winters training finished 6th over the 8 kilometre course, pushed all the way by her team mate Sally Hughes 7th overall but 2nd vet 35 and closely followed by Alison Thurman 14th but also 3rd in the vet lady 45 category. Amanda Clarke completed the quartet of runners in 19th place. Next out on the course were the under 20/ senior and veteran men in the longest race of the day over 10 kilometres in what had become quite testing conditions. Leading the veteran men home in 42nd place was Nick Luke. He was well supported by the evergreen Keith Brown 60th and Paul Beasley in 86th. Nikita wins Silver. The under 17 and under 20 ladies were next out on course with Sutton’s sole competitor for honours being Nikita Pembleton and despite not having the best preparation on the previous day she dug deep on the final circuit of the 5k course to hang on for 2nd place in the under 20’s race. The under 15 girls were the next to
compete and the club rivalry between Beth Ceney and
Florin Bailey. Beth had beaten Florin in the previous weeks North Mids cross country but The final race of the day saw the under 15 boys race over 4500 metres. Sutton’s representatives were Frankie Thornley, Jordon Mitchell, Jake Lacey and Jack Rathbone. Frankie and Jake tried to follow a frantic early pace with Jordon and Jack biding their time. Frankie and Jake were still together at the end of the first lap, the pain could be seen on both the youngsters’ faces as they felt the effects of the fast early pace. Frankie kept on pushing himself all the way to the finish line eventually finishing 9th. Jordan and Jack crept through the field with Jordan 14th overtaking Jake 17th on the run for home and Jack pressing them all the way to the line. The boys were unlucky in the fact they finished in the worst position in the team event 4th just missing out on a medal.

Midlands X-Country Championships Jan 30th 2010.
|
RACE REPORT BY PAUL WHITTINGHAM Stafford Common was the venue for this year’s championship. The weather was bright but cold. Icy frozen conditions awaited all the athletes competing plus the dreaded ditch (a gentle slope in and then a 12ft almost vertical climb up a muddy bank) and dyke (a two foot drop into a mud bath) on the large lap. Only four athletes made the trip from Sutton Harriers and a day of mixed fortunes awaited them. Nikita Pembleton was first to race in women’s under 20’s which was combined with women’s under 17’s and run over 5 kilometres and included the ditch and the dyke. Nikita started steadily and slowly crept through the field of competitors gaining revenge on a number of athletes who had beaten her in the previous week’s county championships, she finished 28th overall in the combined field but was 6th in her age category. The three men who had made the journey were Dan Bailey, Gary Davis and Paul Whittingham; theirs was the last race of the day and probably had the worst conditions to cope with. They had three large laps of the course to cover 12 kilometres in total plus the ditch and the dyke on every lap. They all made steady starts with Paul leading the way, Dan and Gary keeping each other company on this gruelling course. With two laps gone Paul was beginning to move through the field when he had to pull out. Dan and Gary kept each other company all the way to the finishing line. FULL TEAM RESULTS
